Silvester Plotajs Sicoe was born in 1965. He studied at the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts and Design and after that at the Minerva Art Academy in Groningen, the Netherlands. He appears at various solo and group exhibitions in Slovenia and abroad (Austria, Italy, and Israel), and his paintings have won several prestigious recognitions and awards.
Strong, vivid colour compositions on a canvas surface are his most important tool of self-expression, which touches upon relationships and his own interpretation of the world and feelings. His messages are sometimes humorous and sometimes provocative, or it may seem like he is using the visual language of primitive cultures. The intensity of the artist’s feelings is thus transferred to the viewer.
A SCREAMER’S MANIFESTO
“Nobody’s going to tell me what art is or what it should be. I believe no one, not even myself sometimes. Actually I don’t trust the cold reason inside me, but I gladly listen to passion, emotions, creative restlessness, and enthusiasm!
These days I keep hearing about projects in art – my only one is painting. I passionately believe in the expressive power of a painting. I intuitively listen to my inner voice, time, and ideas, and pay no heed to contemporary developments. I follow my own path, I’m a lone rider; I occasionally listen to the white rabbit, who knows nothing about art. His name is Whitey (Belko).
I enjoy painting and my palette has the shape of a heart. I call myself a painter, not an artist; a diver because I often hold my breath when the whirlpool of colour sucks me into the painting. I never know for sure what I’ll bring to the surface, what’s going to emerge. There are no errors or modifications in my painting process, a painting simply emerges and screams! I like screaming paintings. Maybe I’m a painting screamer?!”
